The Year of the Procrastinator

Here we are nearly 48 hours into 2011 and I still can't figure out what year it is. On no less than a half dozen occasions, including one unintentionally hilarious tweet, I have fast forwarded to 2012. I'm not sure why I can't seem to get it through my head that it's 2011, but for some reason I am stuck on 2012.

While I have this same trouble nearly every year, this is the first time I have gone forward rather than backward. Maybe I'm excited for what the next years will bring. Maybe time is just zipping by so quickly for me these days that I don't even know what year it is anymore. It is certain that my grasp on time has gotten worse and worse. Not having a set work schedule doesn't help this.

I'm always late, to one degree or another. My best friend tells me it's because I do unnecessary things as I'm leaving. I say that if I don't sort the magazines before I leave for that lunch date, then I'll forget and it won't get done. I always feel guilty about my tardiness. Not guilty enough to be on time, but guilty nonetheless.

Because of this, I've decided that 2011 is going to be dedicated to the cause of promoting anti-anti-procrastination. In fact, I'm encouraging everyone to embrace their inner procrastinator. I'm not making any grand resolutions, because who ever follows through on them anyway, but in a much more dramatic fashion, I have decided this is going to be MY year. And I'll still probably always be late.

So welcome to 2011, y'all, the Year of the Procrastinator. It took me two days, but I'm finally here with everyone else.

  2. Just saw your tweet & clicked over! I am the WORST at doing unnecessary things before leaving to go somewhere. Ha! It makes me feel more productive or something. I totally related to this post!

  3. Procrastinators unite! I opted not to make any resolutions either, but to focus on trying to finish projects that I've started over the years and never completed. So far, so good! Happy New Year!

  4. I was totally going to shout, "Procrastinators UNITE!"...

    Angie beat me to it.

  5. Having to clock in on time or risk punishment forces me to be punctual, but I am a procrastinator in the biggest sense when it comes to schoolwork. These next two classes that start tomorrow require lots of research papers, which I guarantee will be written at the wee hours of the morning of the day they are due.

Being honest here. I will support you in your anti-anti-procrastination campaign!

  7. I'm the kind of procrastinator who believes that each act of procrastination is an exception and that actually I'm really quite efficient and on top of things. I guess I'll decide later if I really am a procrastinator . . .

  9. I never make resolutions so I am so in.

  10. Resolution are for people who want to lose weight or write a book. I am interested in neither. Both are too much work!

  11. Oh I am always late too. And I am the biggest procrastinator ever. Happy New Year! Hope it's a great one for you. xo

  12. I used to always be late, especially when I became a mom. Then I learned the difference between "leave time", when you actually pull your car out on the road and drive away, and "lead time", which is the amount of time it takes from the moment that you realize you need to leave until you're driving away. If the boys and I are already dressed, our lead time is a minimum of 20 minutes, unless there are dirty diapers to change then add 5 minutes per diaper. That's my new reality: taking 20 minutes to simply walk out my front door.
    Happy New Year, Cara!

  13. So is it OK that I procrastinated on leaving a comment?

    Happy New Year!

  14. I second what Anonymous (Heidi) said above. I started announcing to the household that we need to leave 20 minutes before I actually should leave. It is so TRUE that getting the car out of the driveway takes EONS. So now I leave a buffer. This helps me to be closer to on-time... though still a few minutes tardy on a good day.

  15. I will say that this is the best time of the year to get a ticket. My hubby got one several years ago and it got thrown out because the cop wrote the wrong year on it! Classic!!!
I'm so a procrastinator, too. I'm doing it even as I type. I need to go dry my hair before I pick up the chil'rn from school and I am pushing the clock so I can check and comment on everyone's blog.....some things will never change. Why fight it?

  16. Ryan and I use A.I.S.(ass in seat)time. Then we usually work backwards to find out when things need to start rolling. I have to say Ryan has helped me be more punctual since I've known him. We were recalling recently the first time we had to take Christopher to MD appointment when he was 4 days old. Our entire morning was dedicated to getting out the door on time. We have drastically improved and now need about a 15 minute time frame to achieve punctual A.I.S..

  17. Sometimes I'm so freaking early it SUCKS. My recommendation, to miss being late, is to plan EXTRA time for each step of the trip to wherever you're going. Seriously. I plan my drives and usually estimate too much time. I'm always early unless I have my husband with me and then? Then we're LATE. It sucks.

  18. Happy (belated) New Year!

I swear I keep typing 20011 when I mean 2011 and it's driving me crazy. Why can't I get the year right? URGH!

  20. Wait, doesn't procrastination that mean that next year will be your year? Maybe you'll get two years!

  21. I was going to be on the procrastination thing this year too. Started the first few days working on small projects in the time I'd normally be sitting around, and then felt SO GOOD about actually getting things done for once.

Then I got tired and went back to playing Angry Birds. Oh well. Hope your own resolution goes better -- Happy 2011!

  22. Stop procrastinating and blog already -- I miss you! I'll give you tomorrow to unpack and from your trip and then . . .

  23. YES! I can get behind this movement. Tomorrow perhaps?
