Just last night I was racking my brain trying to think of a good blog post. I read through the dozen or so drafts that I have started and nothing really resonated with me. None of them were funny enough or touching enough to really make the cut. I left them all there, though, because sometimes those blah ideas turn into something. I will be laying in bed or driving down the road and I'll think of just the right punchline to pull it all together.
But that wasn't the case last night and today. I was suffering from a singularly uninteresting couple of days. We'd gone to the gym and to the park. We watched some TV and we danced in the rain. We ate, drank and slept. Not bad days, just, you know, regular days.
This morning we had a playdate at a friend's house. It was a mini-reunion of several of us that had taken Mommy and Me swim classes together last year as well as other moms that have joined the fold over the months. My friend has a pool and it was to be an afternoon of mom talk and kid play, all of whom are within months of each other.
Sophie went into high gear the moment we arrived. As is necessary with my little daredevil, I kept a fairly close eye on her, but mostly contained as she was within the confines of the deck and the fenced-in yard, I truly didn't worry too much. Famous last words.
About twenty minutes after we arrived, I sat at the patio table talking to my friends while Sophie tooled around the patio on one of those little four-wheeled riding things. This one happened to be a fire engine. At some point, the son of the person who's house we were at started pushing Sophie on the fire engine. We all smiled and thought it was cute. Sophie beamed.
It was right about then that several of us realized how close they were to the stairs. Just as I stood up from my chair to go redirect them, Sophie went over the edge. In slow motion, I watched her go ass over teakettle on that blasted fire engine down the stairs. It was only three steps, but it was enough for Sophie to do one full revolution and come down square on her face on the concrete step at the bottom.
She lay on the ground, NOT MOVING, as I ran over to her. I was terrified she had broken her neck, but it was quickly apparent that the only real damage was to her face. She cried, but not frantically, and I took her inside to clean her up. After a few dabs with a wet paper towel and an attempt to hold a cool pack to her forehead, she was squirming and pointing outside.
She spent the rest of the afternoon running, climbing, playing and generally having a good time.
Me? My heart still hasn't slowed down to a normal rate.
Next time I'll just be satisfied with my boring day.

Good heavens!!!! Look at her forehead... that sounds and looks like a terrible fall... I can't imagine (well, I can) your fear as you watched her fall... scary... our kids are always giving us mini heart attacks, aren't they? I'm so glad to hear she recovered so well and was back to herself in no time! What a darling she is, even with her scratches! Poor little girl!
ReplyDeleteOh my, that's so scary! I'm glad she's okay. Looks like she's going to have to grow out some bangs!
ReplyDeleteNothing like a toddler to give you something to blog about.
ReplyDeleteThat's one tough cookie you have there. Isabel would've been dramatic and crying for at least an hour over a boo-boo like that one.
God love 'er. Looks like her guardian angel was on duty, huh?
Oh my gosh---that is quite the boo-boo! You must have been so frantic. I'm getting used to the bumps and bruises and cuts here or there, but I think I'd be a complete basket case if I witnessed something that looked like it might be producing head injuries or broken bones. I'm so glad all the damage was superficial---toddlers are more resilient than we are!
ReplyDeleteShe looks happy. She is happy. Boo boo's happen - and we live to tell about them. Of course, I'm all zen right now about it, but am now getting goosebumps remembering a particular incident with my eldest. Shudder. How come I didn't hear you screaming from here?! ;)
ReplyDeleteMy youngest has a goose egg herself right now. And she claims she has no idea how it happened. No telling what mischief was created.
ReplyDeleteI am with you on the lack of stuff to blog about. I am just thankful there are no additional er visits to report. Knock wood. Throw salt. Cross my fingers. Yadda, yadda, yadda.
Oh...and don't be surprised if your little miss ends up with a black eye as that knot goes away! That is the way that it will drain. I wish someone had told me the first time we had one of those on a forehead!! It was quite shocking :-)
Is this comment long enough?
OK, yours is the second blog I read today. Here is the first: http://babeinbabeland.blogspot.com/2009/07/falling-down.html
ReplyDeleteOddly, I was reading hoping to get some inspiration...I too am boring today.
OH MY GOSH!! Poor lil bean! That looks so painful, I can't believe she's actually cracking a smile. What a trooper!
ReplyDeleteThat's so scary! Hope your heartrate is back to normal. Yeesh!
My children have done the same thing many times but it never gets less terrifying. I am so surprised that we have not ended up in the ER.
ReplyDeleteOh I know the feeling when your heart leaps into your throat and it won't come out for the rest of the day. Poor Sophie, and poor Carabee! My daughter's first skinned knee was at a playgroup and I DIDN"T EVEN SEE IT HAPPEN! I only noticed it as we were leaving.
ReplyDeleteDude. YEOWCH! That's teach you for looking for something interesting to write about. You're such a BAD MOMMY! You totally brought this upon her. ;)
ReplyDeletePoor baby... That is an impressive owie. And she's SMILING! I just love that girl. Glad she's ok. How are YOU doing though?
That was super scary today, but I commend her when she "got back in the ring". I think toddlers are made of rubber! It was fun seeing you today.
ReplyDeleteOh girl!!! They'll scare the begeezes out of ya everytime!!
ReplyDeleteTake the night off, you earned it!!
Ouchie! Glad to hear she is okay.
ReplyDeleteOne time, while I was in the bathroom, ya know...going to the bathroom, I heard a thump and the little boy I watch during the day, started crying. I come running out and he has I giant, "Tom and Jerry" goose egg protruding from his forehead. So I immediately, like the extremely intelligent moron I am, start asking him what happened. He's two. So, I wound up taking him to his mom's office. She is a nurse and she had the RNP check him over. He was fine, but it just made me feel so back because I couldn't even tell her how he did it. What was I supposed to do? A woman's got to poop sometime.
Correction: "feel so BAD"
ReplyDeleteAAAA! That would have freaked me out. Are you breathing yet? So glad Sophie didn't react badly to her fall. At least you know you don't have a drama queen on your hands. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love how she was ready to get back out there like two minutes later! Takes a licking and keeps on ticking!
ReplyDeleteWell~LOL (now that we KNOW she is okay) it IS blogworthy! And a great picture to boot!
ReplyDeleteMan..she got a shiner! And a gooseegg! What a story to tell and show her when she is older;)
Those head bonks scare the pee out of me! When K was about 4, she tripped and did a face plant on the kitchen tile, and I swear it sounded like an egg cracking. She was fine (big bump and bruise but no concussion), but the memory of that sound still haunts me!
ReplyDeleteWhy is it when just get up to move them they take that worse tumble and you get to see it in slow motion? It seems like the bad ones are in slooo mo is that so we remember? Jeeze Glad to hear she's ok and I know the feelinf pit in your stomach.
ReplyDeleteIs it wrong to say that she looks kind of cute with her injury? That must have been scary...yes, sometimes boring is good!
ReplyDeleteDang...that looks like it hurt! It really is amazing how they bounce back up.
ReplyDeleteBattered and bruised - but absolutely gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteNothing like an experience like this to just make you feel AWFUL. N. got her first one like this right before her first birthday. I'm sure she will be just fine, and you will be too, maybe when she's 30??
ReplyDeleteAccidents are the absolute worst! Glad to hear nothing was broken (i.e. her nose!).
ReplyDeleteSomedays I wish they made bubble-wrap for kids...
Oh Ouch!
ReplyDeleteI will never forget the suspense when T did the same thing at that age. He managed to land on his feet. I can only imagine what you were going through!
So glad she's O.K.!!!
Just reading that story made my heart drop! I am so glad that she is okay. She actually looks nonplussed about the entire situation in her photo.
ReplyDeleteOh Shit! I mean shoot! Poor little thing. And I mean you. It's so hard to be the mommy when the little ones get hurt.
ReplyDeleteYes, boring is good.
Ay-yi-yi! Poor thing. I would have had a heart attack too. Sounds like she was such a brave girl though. And look at her smiling and all, too!
ReplyDeleteOh I know all about this!! Like you said, it must be something in the air this week. It is the most terrible feeling ever to watch your child fall and hurt. I'm glad she's okay!
ReplyDeleteThat's an adorable photo of her, scrapes and all. :-)
Poor baby! I HATE that feeling of watching and being able to do nothing!
ReplyDeleteOh, no!
ReplyDeleteLittle kid bumps and bruises sure are scary, aren't they?
Oh, no! My head hurts just looking at that. They really can give you a heart attack, can't they?! Glad all is well.
ReplyDeleteOh, yikes yikes yikes! Those falls are always worse for the mamas than the babies, aren't they? I just replay them over and over, while Axel goes on with his day. I'm glad Sophie is OK
ReplyDeleteHope your nerves have settled by now (sorry for my recent lack of commenting... the auction has been keeping me busy! but in a good way!)
ReplyDeleteAnd this story is eerily familiar... I took a tumble down a flight of concrete porch steps when I was about 2! I ended up with a black eye, though.
Glad the little Bean is ok.
oh my - look at her! that is terrible poor thing! glad she was unaffected!
