Booga Booga Revisited

I'm having kind of a crap day, so instead of venting, (which I would REALLY like to do, but won't because it will just turn into a rant and that won't do anyone any good) I'm going to post this little bit of sunshine from when Sophie was about five months old.

Neil shot this video while trying to make her laugh with his booga booga face. Part of what's so hilarious for me about this video is that Neil had no idea he was shaking the camera. Pay attention at the 19 second mark, Sophie does her tree frog imitation.

What's funny is that I look back at this video and I think that this is about the time I thought I was starting to figure things out. The newborn crazy was losing its hold on me. Yet here I am, a year and a half later, and I realize the crazy is still around. It has just changed. Changed many times over these months. And every time, I think "whew, barely made it through that stage" and then the next stage hits and I'm like "Fuuuuuck, there's MORE?"

But I do believe I've finally caught on. It's a daisy chain of experiences and there is no winning, there is only surviving.

Now, I'm going to finish the Antony and the Johnsons CD I'm listening to and then I'm going to bed and read Skinned by Robin Wasserman (which so far is pretty awesome) until I fall asleep. Which hopefully will be soon and lets all pray that tomorrow is a better day.

"Some times you eat the bar, and sometimes, well, he eats you.*"

*Extra points for anyone that knows the quote.

  1. Don't know the quote but boy so I know the feeling. After an evening of temper tantrums and arguing I'm spent...

  2. this cracked me up! so cute. funny how much she still looks like herself. I know that's a stupid thing to say but, having a six month old, I'm forever looking at her and thinking, "how will you look in a year? two years?"

Anyhow, many many e-hugs to you. I know how hard this mom thing is, but I don't know how hard it is with a walking, talking TODDLER, and I'm both envious that you're there and terrified of arriving.

  5. Acceptace is key.
Knowing that you will never be your pre-baby self, but you will be much savvy-er...
and getting as much sleep as you can sneak in.

  6. That video is AWESOME! She's such a beautiful baby. I'm trying to take as much photos and videos now, because it goes so fast!

The Big Lebowski!! Great film. :-)

And I totally understand about thinking you got the hang of it and then another phase comes along. It never ends!!!

  8. That's so cute, love that face, lol! I think somehow all this toddler crap sets the preparations for age 12. Brace yourself, lol

  9. Honestly, it's so much the second (and third) time around.

You're not so obsessed with everything, you relax (a lot) and aren't quite so hard on yourself, and you learn to try to enjoy each stage knowing it only lasts a second.

This is hard to hear when you're smack in the middle of toddlerhood woes, but before you know it, Sophie will be getting on the bus and you'll be crying your eyeballs out wondering where the time went.

Hope the music and the book helped your spirit. One of the best things you can do as a mom is take care of yourself, otherwise there won't be anything of you left to give to your babies.

And that just may be my longest comment ever.

  10. And I meant to say it's so much EASIER the second time around.

    Geez.

  12. Is today better? I hope so. I'm drowning right now myself.

    Wouldn't mind hearing your rant . . .

  13. That video is adorable!

And yes, the crazy is always there, but somehow, it becomes your norm. I tell everyone up front that my marbles are long gone. (And I agree--it does somehow get easier--or less traumatic??--with each subsequent child.)

  15. Haha! I know the baby was *meant* to be the best part of this video but the cameraman stole the show! LOL!

I hope your Tuesday was much better than your Monday.

  17. Sending you good thoughts and hopes for a way to just figure out how to let it flow around you, as I am only able to do SOMETIMES.

  18. Yep. Life has no finish line other than death which is kind of gruesome to think about ALL the time, you know? No trophies for the cleanest house or best behaved kids! And always a new stage to figure out.

    Grand stuff, this parenting!

I LOVED THAT VIDEO. I must meet this Neil man.

  19. My pediatrician used to pat me on the shoulder and say, "this too shall pass." and I was all yeah but what the hell is next?!

But it does get easier. All the time. Because when they're older you can lock them out of your room and not worry about them falling down the stairs.
