Every Day

We're in the process of erecting a very large new backyard playset for Sophie. It is huge and elaborate and has all the bells and whistles a kid could want. It has already begun to attract the neighborhood kids. While it is not finished yet*, it is done enough that I took Sophie out for her inaugural swing this afternoon.

It didn't come with one of the infant bucket swings and we've been talking about getting one. There is certainly room for it and it will definitely be a safer option, but Sophie loves the big kid swing. We have it set extra low so her little legs can reach and she went right to it when I took her out. I helped her find her seat and then gave her a little push, gripping the back of her jumper throughout the arc. She held on to the chains so tight, I decided to let her swing on her own. And swing on her own she did. She soared. It was beautiful and exhilarating and terrifying.

I am constantly reminded that she is growing up. She now walks down the stairs, both hands tightly on the railing, but she is upright. She dresses herself, puts on her own shoes. She feeds herself. She has an opinion about everything. Every day she shows me some new way that she is leaving the baby behind.

I love that she is making these developments. It is inevitable and wonderful. But my god, they come so fast.

*12-16 hours, the instructions said. With a team of 12 experienced Amish barn builders, maybe.

  1. Fear not. Yes, your baby is growing up, but even thirty years from now, when Sophie is all grown and with her own kids, she will still be YOUR baby, and you will still be so proud, and marvel at the things she does so well. Especially gratifying are those times when you realize that your kid is actually doing things better than YOU did.

  2. I agree with you, the changes come so fast and furious it is enough to send you spinning. I went to put on a pair of pants for Mekhi and his dad said "those are baby pants, he is a big boy now" and he is correct. Time certainly flies.

BTW from what I can see that play set looks amazing! AMAZING. What kind is it? My mom is giving Mekhi one as a gift and perhaps we can get one similar to yours.

  3. Ahhhh...I love the time estimations. A few years ago, we bought a closet organizer. We were told it would take about 2 hours to complete. Well. After three days. During Christmas vacation. With labor done by my engineering husband. It was finally completed.

  4. Ah. My son would be so jealous. I had some money in a personal account and couldn't decide whether to buy a cool play set for the yard or send him to preschool. Education won, alas.... How cool that Sophie is swinging on a big-girl swing! Love her sweet dress too.

  6. Ahhh...the big kid swing. A source of constant fear for me. They must stop growing up...right now!

  7. She looks like she is loving it:)

Summer is so into the swing too this summer. I push and sing Mary Poppin's "Let's Go Fly a Kite" and she soars and sings along. It is too stinking cute!

You are on your way to be the popular back yard now:)

  8. With that, I would say don't bother getting the bucket swing. There's no way she's going to use it now that she knows the alternative.

I just sent off the train table and can't believe I'm sending T to kindergarten in 2 weeks.

Some days do feel like forever, and they do grow so fast! ( Just don't take as long as I did to learn to get more sleep once they're sleeping through the night. You still have an excuse to be tired. These days I have only myself to blame.)

  9. Oh, yes, they're fast. Corinne does the monkey bars now. BY HERSELF. At age 3...

  10. Yes, it's bittersweet. My oldest baby is stating THE FOURTH GRADE in two weeks. And it's official: X is out of the crib into the big boy bed. Sigh.

  11. It is one of those bittersweet moments, is it not? She is adorable. And she looks so happy! I want to see a picture of the entire play structure when it is finally finished being put together!

  12. Sophie's expression is priceless in that photograph!

Snaps to you guys for getting that structure put together. One of my friends is an engineer. Her dad is custom home builder. It took the two of them an ENTIRE weekend and then some to get her kids' play structure built.

Not to brag, but it took me about five second to snap our plastic Little Tykes slide into place.

  14. Oh, I totally feel everything in this post. We are not getting infant swings on ours either. The line about "every day... leaving the baby behind." I totally get. This has been happening at my house too. And I must say that I am extraordinarily impressed that you put that thing together yourselves. Y'all are awesome!

Oh and Sophie has the cutest legs. They still look like baby legs, so there's that.

  18. This set looks AWESOME. What a fortunate girl. As to the swing, we went with a half bucket swing for O. when he outgrew the Fisher Price baby swing we have. Gives him support in the back so he doesn't flop out, but he can get in it himself. Soon be moving N. into it, and O. into the big kid swing we also have.

  20. Today, as we were snuggling under his blankie, I whispered into Baby Jack's ear, "Slow down, Ok? Be a baby for just a little bit longer.. I'm not ready, yet."
