Wake Up Call

One of the real saviors for me has been the gym. You wouldn't know it to look at me, but I'm actually in pretty good shape. I bust gluteus five days a week. I spend 50-60 minutes on the elliptical/treadmill/arc trainer and 15 minutes or so strength training. The truth is I really don't enjoy working out. I hear people all the time talking about how much they love it, but I am not one of them. Nine months in, it is definitely a habit, but not a pleasurable one. The real reason I go? The gym day care. For that hour and 15 minutes, it is all about me. Some days it is the slender thread that holds me to my sanity. And that's no exaggeration, folks.

Yesterday, after a couple of particularly rough days, I was feeling all run down and frustrated and squingy. (Daylight savings is no friend of mine.) The morning had not been especially pleasant, punctuated by a huge fight to get Sophie in clothes and a diaper because my girl is all about going au naturel these days. I was in bad need of a workout, so off to the gym we went.

When we walked into the childcare room, there was another mommy at the desk checking her kids out. She turned around as we approached and noticed Sophie at my side. Her face lit up and she said "HI SOPHIE!!" I was taken aback a little. I know my daughter is a friendly sort, but I hadn't really expected her to be on a first name basis with other members of the gym that I didn't even know. Then the woman tells me that her kids love Sophie and they talk about her all the time. How disappointed they're going to be for missing her.

Isn't that always the way.

Just when I'm settling in for a good wallow, that girl of mine has to puff me up with pride and make me all smiley.

  3. Aww, that's so sweet! Don't you love when other people love your baby? Takes all those yucky feelings away.

Daylight savings has been kicking my butt, too. It's only an hour...what's the big f'ing deal? But I have been in bed, out cold, by 9:30pm every night this week. Then up at 6am. This has got to stop!

  4. I don't like the actual "working out" part either:) It' afterward I like. The productive feeling I get for the rest of the day...the excuse to eat crap:)

Summer has more friends at the Y than me:) They LOVE her there!

  5. They'll do it everytime! I remember Derek's first parent teacher conference and we were told how good he was, yada, yada, yada. Greg and I looked at each other wondering if she was talking to the right parents cause that wasn't OUR SON!!!

P.S. Are you arriving to EE on Thurs or Fri?

    PSS I hate to sweat.....

  7. If your gym offers a BodyPump class try it. I love it and it is way less boring than machines by yourself. I have made some great friends at the gym too. It is a really smart way to get your me time because it is good for you.

Good for Sophie being the friendly, outgoing kid!!

  8. Oh yea, I forgot to mention, Alli is throwing a huge fit when it is time to get dressed too. Hate putting on her shoes, kicks and cries. UGH!!!

  9. I hate working out, but still do it. Today was the first time ever that the kids didn't cry the whole time...they actually played independently. You are a total badass in your workouts too! You're probably in great shape and now I'm jealous and feeling like I should make another trip! I'm so glad she's making friends...that's too cute!

  12. The smile and bright eyes in that picture are just fantastic. I can see why Sophie has a fan club!

I feel a similar feeling of pride (coupled with concern for how much our babysitter takes the kids there) when we enter CVS and employees I don't know greet Bub by name!

  13. What a cutie pie. That's great she's such a social butterfly. I'm sure that feels great knowing she's having a good time while you're getting that time to yourself, too.

  14. Miss Peach is the social butterfly of our health club...where'd she get that?

  15. Girl, I had the same thing happen with Hannah... remember that post I wrote about the woes I'd been having with her? Just after that, I talked with her teacher who just went on and on about what a help Hannah is to her... that Hannah is helping with a few of the kids who are "trouble", and how she's done it gladly and has been great at it.

    The little stinker.

  18. I want that hat. You can just bring it to me next week.

    Ahem.

I hate the gym. Which is why I'm fat. The end.

  19. Kids are always better behaved for someone else. It makes you glad that they behave, but it's also really freaking unfair that they save the worst of it for mom!

What gym do you go to? I'm one of those weirdos that loves going to the gym, if I don't get my workout, I feel like crappo for the rest of the day.

  20. I thought the gym was a mythical place & those people who love it are mentally disabled...hmmm. I learn something new everyday.

As for Sophie, she has great taste. Can I borrow her hat?

  21. Oh my, this is an adorable pic of your cutie! And yeah, I hate to work out. I do it ONLY so I can keep at least one pair of pants/jeans/whatever in my house that I can actually wear. Currently there are two. Think I'm kidding? I wish! Guess I had better get back to it! i just have to drag myself to workout sometimes, but I try to get in at least a couple workouts a week. You're inspiring me with your five a week!!
