A Gnome For All Seasons

I have long wanted a garden gnome. How's that for a first sentence. Have I got you hooked? It is the absolute truth, though, however uncool. I look at them longingly in little old ladies' yards and don't even get me started on the traveling gnome. I think he is just about the cutest thing. Plus, who couldn't use a little gnome magic yard protection? I was always a little nervous about what my friends or neighbors would say, though. Would they think I was weird? Is it just too corny? But after much deliberation, I finally decided it was time to satisfy my yen for one of the little men.

As luck would have it, I was wandering through the clearance aisle for the outdoor stuff at my beloved Target when I came across this dignified fellow.
Unbelievably, they wanted a mere $2.89 for him. Needless to say, I snatched him up before some other lucky gal caught sight of him. Smugly, I clutched him to my bosom for the long walk to the cashier. The whole drive home all I could think about was how excited I was to get my new friend comfortably positioned in his new home. Once there, I literally bounded out of my car in my enthusiasm, ran up to the front of the house and sat Toby (that's his name, it's short for Tobias) down in a place of honor in the front yard. I even had Neil bring Sophie out so we could admire him as a family. I admit, I worry a little that jealous neighbors might spirit him away, but that's a risk I'll have to take. I mean, really, look at that face. Those eyes, the beard, that toadstool. Just scrumptious.

Here he is next to his favorite bush. What, did you really think I would put a full size gnome in my yard? Not this time.

Don't count it out. I still might.

  1. I need a gnome! Like right now! I once received a pretty cheesy plastic one with a light bulb inside but it just isn't the same, ya know?

  2. Thanks for stopping by, Stefanie! Honestly, the gnome has been there for three days and every day I go out to look at it like five times. I might have a gnome obsession.

  3. If I'd been at Target the same time as you we'd have fought 'til the bitter end. That gnome would've been MINE. Mine, I tell ya. He definitely rocks...big time.

And hello...I got a movie from Netflix today ("Flawless," with Demi Moore and Michael Caine--it was so-so) and mine did not have a Twilight promo on it. I'm so sad. Sigh...

  5. I so love that you would out yourself about your gnome obsession by posting about it! That said, they creep me out a little bit (sorry!) But let me know if they keep the moles away or something! LOL

  6. Those gnomes multiply, you know. Pretty soon you'll have gnomes of all sizes, shapes and colors.

  7. I'm just curious, did he come with the name "Tobias" (Toby, for short), or is that your own doing? My high school sweetheart's name was Toby. The name is much better suited for a gnome. Or a dog.

Congrats on your "new addition." :)

  8. Lula - Don't tell anyone, but there was actually a whole box of the little suckers. I contemplated getting a whole pack of them, but thought that MIGHT be overdoing it.

Heather - I do want one. I so do.

Christy - I'm thinking about starting a Gnome Addicts Support Group. The average age will likely be in the mid-70s.

Damselfly - You know, I've heard that. I'll have to get ceramic lions or something to control the gnome population and then I'll need the jockeys to control the lions and pretty soon it will be completely out of control. I'll be that house that people drive by and say "what the heck...?"

MGM - Toby(Tobias) was my doing. He only lets me call him Toby, though, everyone else has to call him Tobias. He's funny that way.

  10. My husband and I joked about photo shopping a gnome into all of our wedding pictures. Kind of like a roaming gnome/where's waldo kind of thing.
