Ode To The Dollar Store

I have to confess an unhealthy affection for the dollar store. It's not just that everything is so darn cheap, most of it being, you know, $1, but also the sheer variety of goods they offer. I mean where else can you buy a squeaky rubber chicken, dinnerware, gift bags, tampons (en espanol), wicker baskets AND helium balloons? It's like the circus for housewives.

Whenever I am feeling like doing some shopping, but the old checkbook won't tolerate a trip to Target, it's off to Dollar General I go. I can spend an hour in there, meandering my way down the aisles, getting much of the same junk treasures for about a tenth of the cost.

How do I love thee, Dollar General?
Let me count the ways:

Gallon and quart freezer bags
Kiddie book
Three greeting cards
Coloring book
Two peppermint patties
Apple juice
Two photo frames
Brownie mix*

Total: $10.14

*Despite my love for all things Dollar Store, I am a little weird about buying food there. I made the brownies last night, though, and they were DELICIOUS. Of course, I used a glass dish and it took them an hour to bake, during which time I contemplated eating them with a spoon, but who's counting.

  3. We have Dollar Tree and Dollar General. Gotta say that I like the Dollar Tree where EVERYTHING is $1. That Dollar General is tricky where things are 1,2 3 or so on dollars. Yes it is still a deal, but not like the dollar tree where you know it is just one buck.
It is my kids FAVORITE place to go because they can buy alot with what little money they have!

  5. Yeah, I'll run into the Dollar Tree for one thing and come out with a giant bag of bargain priced crap that I apparently couldn't live without. It's great, though, for stuff like crayons, Play-Doh, notebooks, construction paper, party favors etc.

  7. Wow. You and I are so alike. I puffy hear the dollar store, and I'm also weary of buying their food. Maybe I'll try their brownies next time ;)

  8. The Dollar store is my favorite place to buy lawn decor. Those cute little garden things. I always decorate the entry to my driveway with seasonal stuff from there. And the nice thing is if it gets nasty, I just throw it away. Most of it is savable.

I do hate buying toys from there, though. They are broken by the time we get home.....

  9. If only there was a snack bar at the dollar store, I could quit Target. Lately, I have been able to go to Target without, you know, "Targeting," but we still have to have our snack at the end of buying our necessities.

I enjoy Dollar Tree, especially the cute kiddie wrapping paper and the puzzles and coloring books.

  11. I used the dollar store for my sister's wedding shower - favors, plates, decorations, etc. I used a cart and my bill came to $80! Then they informed me that they do not take credit cards...Luckily, they do take debit cards. I was not happy about the prospect of putting 80 things back on their shelves!
