Sleepnanigans

For the last year or so, naptimes and bedtimes have been a breeze. Sophie happily climbed into bed and went right to sleep and then slept either for a full 2-3 hour nap or through the night. I contend that this easiness is to make up for the absolute hell that were sleepytimes for the first 15 months of her life.

But things haven't been so great lately. Thanks to a nasty cough and a subsequent ear/sinus infection, Sophie hasn't been sleeping well. More significantly, though, she hasn't been going to sleep well. She cries and screams. Generally, I leave her in her room and within a few minutes she will tire herself out and fall asleep. Unfortunately, she rarely falls asleep in her bed. Her favorite spot is on the glider. It's where I nursed her for 20 months and it is where I read to her now.

Most days, once I am sure she is asleep, I will creep into her room and as delicately as possible move her to her bed. I don't have empirical proof that she will not sleep as long or as well in the chair, but I hate to think of her contorted into strange positions, so I risk waking her to transfer her to her bed. The good news is that nowadays she is a whole lot harder to wake than she used to be and generally sleeps through the maneuver.

So today, when she went down for her nap easily, I was grateful and optimistic that it was the beginning of a return towards her old ways. I put her down in her bed, read Goodnight Moon, tucked her in and left the room. I watched her on the monitor as she rolled around on her bed for a minute and then got out. After this I couldn't see her anymore, but I could hear her puttering around her room. At one point the radio on the clock was turned on, but turned off after a minute or two and soon all other sounds quieted. A short time later, I crept up to her room, prepared to find her in the glider.

I got a surprise when I opened the door.

She wasn't in the glider. Nor was she in the bed. Or the floor. Or the changing table. All spots she occasionally curls up. I started to get a little panicky as I looked around the room. Could she have gotten out?

But just when I was about to totally freak out, I spotted her. She had found a cozy new spot.

My sweet little laundry bean.

  2. My middle one was the same way. That girl fell asleep anywhere. Usually without pants, and with a book over her head.

I hate to tell you this, but it's not the colds/infections/ears...it's the age.

I remember being told something about 'coming into one's self' and 'battle of the wills'.

    :)

The Bean may feel better sooner than she starts going to sleep better. :)

  3. My kids have all been awful about bedtime. I am so with you girl. I have crawled camando style I don't want to admit how many times out of a room.
Sickness does that. MAN! Every time you think things are going good in the the nighttime ritual something as simple as a headcold can mess you up for months! I SO feel your pain.
Summer's room is gated, and there have been many occasions that I have gone to check on her, and she is no where to be found. I of course immediatly assume Elizabeth Smart or something drastic and go into complete panic. (She usually is asleep behind the rocker...once in the closet) I think it is a hoot that not only did Sophie fall asleep IN the toy bin, but IN the process of playing dress up (hat on head:)

Thanks for lubbing me:) Be brave and go see your grandma! Screw everyone else...you are only on this earth once.

  6. Too funny.....I am totally LOL!
That Bean is such a cutie.

Alli still sleeps in her crib. She doesn't even try to climb out. Not sure why....keep thinking it is nice but weird. I mean, wouldn't a normal kid climb out?!?! We can even leave the side down and she won't climb out. When she wakes up, she calls for someone and doesn't even try and get up on her own.

Check out the Bee Movie if you haven't already. It is SOOO good. We all love it.

  8. So sweet! When I think of transitioning Christopher to a toddler bed, I cringe. Then I think, if Sophie will do it, then there is hope! Love the hat on the head. That girl cracks me up!

  9. That is the most precious thing I have ever seen. Is she actually sleeping like that?

  10. That reminds me of my sister when she was Sopie's age. She would climb into a closet drawer and fall asleep!
Sophie is much more practical, because if you have to leave in a hurry, you can just tote her in the basket! Clever girl!

  17. Our boy is very cute when he goes to sleep. He says, "Bye!"

But he also wakes up at least once during the night. And since he jumped off the crib, there's no more "Let's see for a couple of minutes if he cries himself to sleep."

I can imagine how panicked you were.

  18. I love it!

I had to go back to the first picture and look again...totally thought that was a basket full of laundry sitting by the window, not a basket full of Sophie!

Good luck on the sleep thing. Hope she gets better soon, and returns to her happy sleeping ways.

btw, LOVED the Christmas card! Thanks so much for including me on your list!

  19. OMG, how cute. We've been in the same boat since mid-November. Carley had a cold, and it threw the sleep all off kilter. I am happy to report it's getting better, and it will for Sophie too.

As my Mom says: This too shall pass.

  20. Hee hee! Wait until she sees that picture of herself when she's older.

My son slept in the chair for a while too, and I'd move him. Ooof!

  21. For as much as it would have freaked me out to not be able to find my child, this is the funniest thing I have seen in a while!

  22. Hey, whatever works, LOL! I admit there are nights where, if I could sleep in a laundry basket, just to sleep at all, I would be delighted to try!

I am LOL thought at her creativity. And face down! Too funny!

So sorry to laugh though, as I am sure your heart rate is just getting back to normal!!

    Hugs!

  25. That is fantastic! Sweet. sweet one. She still has baby shape, but she's going to grow a lot really fast in the next few months. Hang on tight.
