In Baltimore, a Hon is not just a charming endearment but a way of life. Anyone who's seen a John Waters movie (Hairspray 1988 is the best!) has some idea of what a Hon is about. They're hard working, high living, animal print wearing, big hair having, loud laughing, bright makeup kind of women. They're no nonsense and down to earth. Don't think you can get anything by one of these gals but once you've found a place in their heart, you're there forever. Each year the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore hosts an event called the Hon Fest. Among the many treats that await visitors to the festival are the Hon Beauty Contest (the bigger the hair, the better), great music, progressive art (lots of flamingos and velvet Elvises...Elvii?) and lots of food. Come prepared to laugh. A lot. It's campy and crazy and tons of fun.So without further ado, there's lots to see here at Land of Bean, feel free to poke around. Browsing is definitely encouraged. But that's good because that means I'm all well and fed at her house and all I have to do at yours is visit!! See how nice I am that way? Like I told Kathi I get to Maryland quite a bit with my job and I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for the hons -- can't say I've ever noticed before! I think was too awed by all the trees -- my part of the country has trees too but not of the magnitude you all do!!

I LOVE the Free State! Lived out your way for several years, down DC Way. I'm a Bawlmer kinda gal! Used to go to Orioles games at the old Memorial Stadium. Remember parking in those alleys and watching Earl Weaver rant and coveting his tomato patch out beyond the outfield wall--or was it near the bullpen? Don't quite remember! Your blog makes me a tad homesick for some great Old Bay and Steamed Crabs. Ever been to Bertha's? I had an Eat Bertha's Mussels bumper sticker on my car for years! :)
