Aged Cow

We went to the Maryland State Fair today. It was alright. (Note a tinge of disappointment?) I haven't been in a long time, so I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it was a lot more exciting when I was a kid. And much bigger.

Appropriately, I ate enormous quantities of food, all of which was extremely unhealthy and therefore quite tasty. We saw lots of animals, especially the little babies, which made we want to be a vegetarian. Only, after I eat the BBQ pork roast that's in the crock pot right now. So maybe I'll start that tomorrow. Oh, who am I kidding. I've already got this week's menus planned and they're all about meat. Unfortunately, we missed the pig races (featuring Olga, the fastest pig in America!) because they had the location wrong in the guide book and we spent too long ogling the goats which were housed where the pig races were supposed to be. I love goats, stinky, cranky things that they are. I think they're cute. I didn't have funnel cake. That might be some sort of State Fair sin, but I just didn't have room for it. We didn't play any games because I didn't want to win and then have to carry some ginormous Tweety Bird all the way back to the car. I'm not the type to play just for the fun of it. Either I play to win or I don't play at all. Competitive much? Neither did we go on any rides, because Sophie is just too small. So basically it was just us watching the fun. And the people. At a place like that, you realize that it truly does take all kinds. After walking around for 3 hours, the babe was tired and my legs were weary, so home we came. My little bean was asleep before we got out of the parking lot.

I'm not sure exactly what "Aged Cow" is, sounds a bit prejudiced to me, but after all of the food and walking around, that is exactly what I felt like.

Update on the condition of my noggin: Despite Sophie's attempt to do me in with a floor lamp yesterday, I came through with just a small bump and a headache.

  1. That sounds about how my trips to the fair go lately. It was way different when I was a kid!!! But it's still fun to go and just feel the excitement in the air for a bit!

  2. I'm a State Fair junkie. Actually, I'm a sucker for any kind of a fair. My BIL's FIL (got that?) runs the Northern Wisconsin State Fair, and his oldest son ran the Ohio State Fair for years, before relocating to Utah to run--you guessed it!--the USF! Those cows you've got in MD would fit in well in Wisconsin--are they Holsteins? BTW, thanks for coming by and visiting The Great State of Wisconsin today!

  3. I love State Fairs!! We have cream puffs at ours and that is the highlight of my summer. Sadly, I missed it this year making cakes but, you have to trade off somewhere, I guess.

Thanks for visiting my blog today and for leaving such sweet comments.

  4. It won't be long before Sophie will think the state fair is the best thing ever, and your wonder and awe will be renewed. Right now it's just an effort in "pain in the ass."

  5. I am so not a fan of fairs like I used to be! They are always hot, crowded, I don't ride rides, and I always eat until I'm sick. And they are smelly. And about the funnel cake? Why is it that every time I go to a street festival or whatever the one thing I always want is a funnel cake, YET I never have room for them?! I need to start eating them first!

  6. We went to a county fair this summer and had a great time! They didn't have pig races though--I feel ripped off! Did you have cotton candy? I hope so!!

  7. I am sorry that you missed the funnel cake - I love funnel cake. Hmm, I stopped eating meat after realizing what veal is.

  8. I've never been to a state or county fair, but I was mighty strong on the Catholic church festival circuit for many years.

I'm with mekhismom on the funnel cake. Isn't there always room for funnel cake?

My mom and I purchased two funnel cakes at a neighborhood festival about a month ago. They costs $9 each, which we didn't realize until they asked for our money. Is it just me or is that exorbitant pricing?

  10. OK, between Olga (so sad you missed her!) and feeling like an aged cow, you totally had me laughing and waxing nostalgic for a good ol' state fair.

Did you eat a funnel cake?

  12. I gotta say, I'm with you on the fair experience. It's all about the FOOD! (And when Sophie's big enough to ride the rides? Take one look at the rusty bolt holding that death trap together and...or perhaps I am overly paranoid?)

  14. Oh, whew! When I read your post title, I thought you were talking about me!

I love goats too, especially the little pygmy goats. Gonna have to get me some of those when I retire someday.
