We have an old, to be generous we'll call it antique, piano that a former coworker of mine gave us. It is in desperate need of a some love. It has several keys that have lost their ivory, is probably quite out of tune (not that I would know) and has at least one dead key. Neil has been pushing to get rid of it pretty much since the day it came in to our lives. I never learned an instrument and it is one of my great regrets so my thought was that it would be perfect for our kid(s) to learn how to play the piano. However that is at least a few years off.
For now, it just sits, gathering dust, in our living room.
After having walked past, under and into it for the last umpteen months, Sophie took notice of it for the first time yesterday. Since I would probably pee myself if one of the cats jumped up on the keys in the middle of the night, we usually keep the cover over them but she discovered that she could lift up the cover and stick her little hand in and make NOISE. Seeing an opportunity to keep my sweet pea occupied for a little bit, I took off the cover and let my little musician go to town. Now she can't get enough of it.
Neil had broken me down and I was just about ready to ship it off to wherever old pianos go to die, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe I'll call up a piano tuner. See if we can breath some life back into this old beast.

ReplyDeleteWe had a piano in similar condition that I used to play "Space" music on. (Star wars, Close encounters of the third kind era)
I never learned how to really play it either and for a long time it was a big regret.
Hope you have some success. She really looks intrigued.

ReplyDeleteThat is one thing I regret. Not getting my 2 older kiddos into learning an instrument. But with our toddler, we have been seriously considering putting him in lessons for either piano or guitar.

ReplyDeleteI would call a piano expert in and see how much it would cost, etc. and ask if they think it's worth it to do the work.
ReplyDeleteIt would be breat if you could get it up and running and have Sophie take lessons when she's old enough. And you could take lessons too! Don started taking lessons when the kids atarted a few years ago and he's really into it!

ReplyDeleteCall someone and get that baby tuned. I liked the comment about you taking lessons too. We don't have space for a piano now, but I'd like to have one someday. Bub "plays" the one at my aunt and uncle's house every chance he gets.

Ah. We had an old piano too. I have fond memories of playing with it. I had one official piano lesson (not on that old thing, though), but it was something to do.

ReplyDeleteReminds me of a player piano my parents had in their house. To tune it and fix it up would cost as much as a new one. lol.
ReplyDeleteThen they had trouble eventually GIVING it away. People wanted it but couldn't move it. lol.

We have a hand me down piano, too. They are SO expensive that it's worth looking into getting it fixed...
ReplyDeleteI took piano lessons as a kid. About a year ago, my mom gave me the piano. That this hasn't been in tune since my parents bought it! And that was over 15 years ago! One of these days, I'd like to get it tuned and start my girls with lessons. I can't teach them myself... I don't have the patience to do that!
