SnOMG 2010

(This was taken Friday night at about 10pm looking out at the street from our front door. At that point, we probably only had 5 or 6 inches, a teensy fraction of what was to come.)

By now you've no doubt heard all about the snowstorm that hammered the Mid-Atlantic region over the weekend. It is not an understatement to say that even though they told us it was coming, we were still awed by the sheer quantity of snow that descended on us. I am not sure about the official totals, but at our house we got about 25 inches. 25 INCHES!

Now comes the slow and difficult task of digging ourselves out. We have a fairly long driveway with only one snow shovel and no snow blower. After all, Maryland averages only 18.5 inches of snow a year. This year we have exceeded the greatest snowfall in a year EVER. (That's 63 inches!) We spent both Saturday evening and Sunday working on digging our way out. We're halfway there. Needless to say, Neil will be home from work tomorrow to continue this process.

(Neil enjoying a bottle of "Daddy's Little Helper" in the garage during a break from shoveling.)

Meanwhile, Sophie LOVES it. She runs around the house, clasping her hands together, saying "GO OUTSIIIIDE?!" She almost vibrates, she's so excited to get out in the snow. She even happily gets into her snow gear, if you can believe it. Once outside, she clambers through snow that is nearly as high as she is tall. She even "helped" us shovel with a tiki torch leftover from a backyard barbecue a few years back. (Note to anyone considering shoveling snow with a tiki torch: they are only exceeded in their ineffectiveness by their tackiness.) Every time we take her out, we have to drag her back in. She would stay out all day if we let her.

Overall, we were lucky. We never lost power, as hundreds of thousands of poor souls in our region did, and the tv didn't even flicker during the worst of the storm. So for us, this has been a lovely couple of days spent enjoying each others' company and the amazing beauty of the white stuff.

Now they're predicting MORE snow for Tuesday. The last forecast I saw said 5 inches or more.

What a winter!

Have you stopped in at BlogTrotting? Not only are we on an amazing tour, we're having a giveaway!

  2. 25 inches?!?!

    Holy Cow Girl!

We got some snow, but nothing compared to that! It almost could be fun as long as you got to keep your electricity and heat and water on:)

More on Monday night coming for us too...I swear, no more SNOW DAYS!!

Sophie looks like a shoveling pro out there! Summer lasts about a minute. You know, after you get the snow suit, the hat, the gloves, the boots and everthing on both of you and then actually GET out there and then she's like..."oh..it's cold!"

  3. That's fortunate. #3 behaves similarly in the anxious-to-go-out part. But, once outside the gloves come off for some has-to-be-touched-with-bare-skin item and things spiral downward quickly to, "MY HANDS IS BURNING MOMMY. DEY HOOOOOOOOOT!" There is not shoving the wet, snow caked gloves back on at this point and only a return to the warm house and a pack of fruit snacks can remedy his pain. We got 32 inches and will be trapped here for the rest of the week. That's what I get for living in a hilly, "lake oriented" community (sounded nice when we bought it). Nice in the summer, blows chunks in Snowmaggedeon! See you at Bloggy Boot Camp and hopefully this'll melt by then! Fingers crossed.

    Anyway, good luck digging out.

  5. Sophie looks so cute in her snow gear! So, so glad you were not without power and, God forbid, television. Also glad your roof is all fixed now!

  7. We had lots of rain. They are talking about sleet for us this weekend...but it's probably not really for us but for the far north of Georgia. I'd like to see a little snow...it looks so pretty. But the digging out? Yeah, not too interested in that!

  8. So, yeah, do you remember what it was like shoveling snow in the city? Where on earth is it supposed to go? I'm hosting a baby shower at my house on Saturday. I'm considering rescheduling and making it a "meet the baby" shower after my friend delivers, because there is no where for the guests to park. If we get another foot or more, which is what I'm hearing, I may have a fucking breakdown. Especially since I have to go to work anyway, and making childcare arrangements is such a pain!!

  10. Can you believe this mess!? We got almost 30 at our house and I am really not looking forward to what tomorrow night is going to bring. I have never been so over snow in my life. At least Sophie is enjoying herself. :)

(Love Neil's hat btw! Go Ravens!!)

  11. What a mess! And more tomorrow for us too, 2-4" they are saying. Ugh.

That picture of the bean is priceless. She has made herself a little snow chair. LOL! I guess it's hard work shoveling with a tiki torch.

Love the pics! So fun for Sophie! Neil looks quite happy too, lol. I wonder if you guys are due to get the one that's about to hit my area on tuesday. I think it's going W - East. (I think)

  13. I saw the weather channel saying that Baltimore had gotten 23.5 inches the other day and I was hoping that you and the Bean were warm and well.

  14. I still just cannot get over all that snow!!! I live in CT, and we've barely had any all winter! Totally weird!

  15. Oy. I am so sorry to hear. That is way too much snowfall at once. If it wasn't for all of the shoveling, it wouldn't be so bad, but it is such a pain in the butt!!!

I hope Tuesday gives you a mere dusting..and a warm up comes for you all soon!

  20. I am so glad we don't have the snow this year! Our 5 feet last year just about killed me! Just think - you will be in great shape after all that shoveling!

  21. Snow day #78 for us today. OK, not really. But it feels like it. As I'm surrounded, yet again, but inches and inches of white stuff.

And the Board of Education JUST CALLED (as I was leaving this comment) to inform me that "All Lee County schools will be closed tomorrow, February 11."

    Of course.
