Lovey

One of the first things I bought for Sophie was a little lovey blanket at Target. It was shortly after we found out we were having a girl and as I browsed through the baby section, I saw this off-white furry/silky little blanket with a teddy bear head. It was so soft and cuddly that I just couldn't resist. It was during that early time in pregnancy when you're not huge yet, so you don't feel terrible, but the reality of having a baby is beginning to settle in. I suppose that would be the beginning of the nesting instinct.

What I didn't realize is that the baby would not be interested in it for a long, long time. I'm pretty sure I thought that she would come out ready to clutch a blankie. Some of our friend's kids started with loveys as early as 5 or 6 months, but Sophie didn't really get into the act until a couple of weeks ago. She has a couple and she seems happy to interchange them, but regardless which one, she can generally be found dangling or wearing one of them.

I don't know if I had a lovey when I was a kid, but if I did, it went the way of most of my other baby stuff. I hope to save at least one of these for her, give her the kind of connection to her youngest years that you just can't manufacture.

  3. My mom bought Ava a lovey. It's so soft and pink. Ava would rather hold a burp cloth.

I had a blankie. I still have it too. My mom gave me a bunch of my baby stuff at my baby shower so right now it's in a box in Ava's closet. Maybe I'll let her play with it at some point... maybe. It's still my blankie.

  4. I don't think I had one. At least I don't remember it. I love the photo collage you really captured Sophie having fun with the lovey for us. What did you use to make it?

  6. We do the blankets. They each have three amazingly similar blankets, furry on one side silky on the other, blue and pink accordingly. The only difference is that all three have different patterns in the furry side. Although we sleep with all three every night, there is a favorite "best blanket." My son likes the bumpy one and my daughter likes the flat one. Complicated, isn't it?

  7. I had a Woobie too, mine was a pink small blanket. My kids never got attached to anything. I hope you have a back up in case the lovey gets lost somewhere.

  8. I had a teddy bear that was made by an aunt. Liam loves his 3 blankets and sometimes has to have all of them then there is mouse mouse that he sleeps with so we'll see if he cuts down on one to be the favorite

  9. Gosh that looks cozy and comfy and alittle silky! Do they make big people loveys? And if not...WHY! Oh the humanity! lol.

Really though, that blanket looks really nice!

  11. My daughter has had a woobie since she was 11 months old. It's one of those soft books with the taggie things sewn on the edges. Daughter is now 5 1/2 years old and STILL is attached to "Taggie Book" like her life depends on it. She has major meltdowns if she cannot find it. The rest of the household is ready for Taggie to go to his resting place. I have visions of her dragging it to her marriage bed on her wedding night!

My son, who just turned three, has never developed this sort of attachment to any particular object.

  12. Peanut has three: two bunny blankets that she calls "Bunny-Bunny" and a teal blankie she calls "Bay" ... it's a bit much if you ask me :)

  14. In recent months, the Bub has a Pooh that he must sleep with. My nieces have "kikis" and let me tell you, you do not want to see what happens when one of their kikis is lost.

My baby brother (now 22) had "silkies" that he carted everywhere for many years. These silkies were my mom's and grandma's old slips and nightgowns.

  15. Fly has a favorite blankie.

I think this is adorable, and yes, I hope you can save something for later on. :)

  16. I love the "Woobie"/Mr. Mom references...because frankly, that is an amazing movie.

    Ok...
so we call Caroine, "Linus," as in CaroLinus, because she has a blanket. Not blue, like the original Linus', but yellow. It's her thing. She sleeps with it every single night, and has since she was about 3 months old.

That blanket is worth its weight in gold. It shall never depart from her presence. Amen.

Love all the pics of Sweet Sophie.
