My Own Celebration

To celebrate surviving the first year of mommyhood, I treated myself to a massage yesterday. Actually, as it turns out, the spa treated me to a massage. My original appointment had been for last Saturday but the masseuse didn't show up, so they gave me a gift certificate for a free massage. As irritated as I was to miss my appointment, the idea of not having to pay was verra nice.

I have had massages many times over the years, but I am always a little bit weirded out by it. Getting (mostly) naked in front of a stranger is not exactly the norm for the uber-modest me. But then to have them touch you all over? Definitely a little bit uncomfortable. I am always the most on edge when she gets to my jiggly parts. Who am I kidding, they're all jiggly parts. I know she sees people all day and statistically at least half of them are heavier than me, but that still doesn't keep me from worrying that she's like, "wow, that's some serious cellulite." Not worried enough to get my cellulite to the gym, but that's a story for another day.

Usually I get the Swedish massage, but this time I decided to get the Deep Tissue. I knew the DT would be a little rougher than the Swedish, but I wasn't quite prepared for how rough. She kept saying, tell me if I'm being too hard and I'm like "TOO HARD! TOO HARD!" A big reason I had come for this was because my right shoulder and neck have really been bothering me, so she focused on those areas. Yowza, did she focus on those areas. The good news is that my shoulder feels better, but I was doing some serious teeth clenching during the massage.

I think I'll stick to the Swedish massage from now on.

Lucky for me, my celebration didn't end there. Sophie slept from 6:45 last night until 5am this morning, when I nursed her and she went back to sleep until 7:45. On top of actually getting 6 hours of sleep in a row, it was freaking awesome to get up after the sun for a change. What a great way to start year two!

  1. Wow, congrats on the 6 hours of sleep! My little man (15 mos. today) still hasn't let me do that! 'Course, he came down with a cold yesterday, so last night was especially fun =(

  2. John and I were just saying that we need to schedule massages for ourselves. It will be our modest anniversary gift to each other. We like getting a couples massage which allow us to be in the same room with one another. Weird how some places have couples massages but they separate the couple. What's the point in that. I personally prefer the deep tissue and also prefer that I have a man only because most of the women I've had in the past don't use enough pressure. And when I got a pregnancy massage I was so annoyed cause the lady was too scared to use any pressure. I was thinking--Geez, if I wanted to get tickled, I'd do it myself!

    3. sleep!

I am a weirdo about massages, too. In fact, I am so weird I have never had one, and don't much desire to have one. I wish I felt otherwise.

  7. I did a DT once. Never again. Who knew a petit Vietnamese women could have an elbow that could puncture and organ.

  8. I'm a wuss when it comes to massages. There's always at least one part where there's too much pressure and that ends up tensing me up all over again.

Congrats on the sleep! I shouldn't be complaining since Ava does sleep pretty well at night for a newborn but I can't wait to get 6 hours in a row again.

  9. LOL... I always get the deep tissue massage from "Sascha from Russia". PURE torture, and I'm bruised for a couple of days, but she sure works all the knots out!

I'm just as modest as you... and our spa is European style...everyone walks around naked. So naturally, I always wear a robe. ;)

Glad you had your own celebration!

  11. You are a brave woman! I think I would worry so much about my jiggly parts being in view that I wouldn't benefit a bit from the massage!

  14. Awww that is so great that you got some sleep!! I soooo need a massage like the DT...my neck has been so stiff for so long I think that it would take a good pounding out to get it back to normal. ;)

  15. I have only had a few massages in my life--I'm a litte weirded out by them too. I'm glad your shoulder feels better--it was worth all that teeth clenching!

  16. I carry a lot of tension in my back, or so I've been told by every person who has ever massaged me. I've given up on professional massages b/c I find it painful and b/c they end up focusing on only one or two square inches of my immensely tense back. I ask my toddler to bang on my back sometimes, and it's not bad.
